ABOUT ME

Approximately mid-career as a professional, I started attending fine arts classes in the evenings with emphasis on painting and drawing, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal. Retirement gave me more time to paint and draw. Often I would use photographs as preliminary sketches for paintings. With the introduction of digital photography I found that I could finish the camera image at the computer and today I work exclusively with the camera.
My approach to image making is definitely as one of the fine arts. Although the image may tell a story it must meet the artistic criteria of a successful painting. Light is important, as are the textures and shapes that go to make up the image. The camera is my sketchpad, with the convenience of being able to make many sketches. The computer allows me to refine these sketches into their final form.
Shirley and I travel a great deal and so I have the opportunity of finding images all over the world. Yet many of my favourites are taken at the summer cottage in the Laurentians north of Montreal, or even in our back yard in town.
As in any discipline photography involves continuous learning. We learn from our own research, from our experience and from other like minded people. My active participation in the Montreal Camera Club and the Pines West Camera Club in Florida has contributed enormously to my knowledge and enjoyment of this rewarding avocation
